an ocean of possibilities

“As 2030 approaches, we must ask ourselves – are we on track? Have our efforts resulted in healthier marine life, restored habitats, and more resilient ecosystems? Or are we falling short of the transformation the ocean urgently needs? Do we need to rethink our strategies?”

—Dona Bertarelli

An Ocean of Possibilities is a creative and prospective initiative exploring how the ocean can inspire and drive sustainable solutions for our planet. By bringing together scientists, communities, artists, and decision-makers, the project invites diverse voices to reimagine our relationship with the ocean—not just as a resource, but as a source of resilience, innovation, and hope. Dive in with us to co-create a future where ocean and society thrive together.

WHy envision the future of ocean sustainability?

“We cannot separate the ocean from the rest of the planet. We need to rethink, recalibrate, and reorganise our relationship with the natural environment—understanding that humans are part of ecosystems, not separate from or opposed to nature.”

— Tobias Troll

“The ocean is not too big to fail, nor too big to fix; but it is too important to neglect.”

— Jane Lubchenco

“We’re always saying, ‘we don’t know enough’. We are indeed lacking a lot of information on places like the deep sea. But do we know enough to make better decisions? Yes, we do.”

— Diva Amon

“What is at the core of transformation? It’s the people, it’s the people, it’s the people.”

— Kate Brown

Report

An ocean of possibilities – summary report

This report captures the outcomes of a two-year collective foresight process exploring what a just and regenerative ocean future could look like beyond 2030. It presents five vivid visions of desirable ocean futures crafted through global consultations, interviews, and workshops, and distills the common actions, principles, and systemic shifts needed to make them a reality. From rethinking governance and economic models to elevating ocean justice and cultural transformation, the report offers a compelling synthesis of civil society’s imagination and concrete pathways for change. It is both a tool for dialogue and a foundation for shaping a post-2030 ocean agenda.

James Hita, a Māori activist from Aotearoa and participant in the Ocean of Possibilities project, shared this poem, inspired by the visioning process.
